65,000 missing mugs: Tesla employees can’t stop stealing coffee cups

Of all the controversies and mess-ups to have taken place at the Tesla plant outside Berlin, this might be the strangest. At a recent staff meeting, plant manager Andre Thierig stated that the company had bought 65,000 coffee mugs since they started production at the Grünheide plant, with employee theft being a persistent problem.

“We’ve bought 65,000 coffee mugs since we started production here. 65.000! Statistically speaking, each of you already has five Ikea coffee cups at home,” Thierig said. “I’m really tired of approving orders to buy more coffee cups”

And this isn’t the first time that Thierig has been in the news in recent weeks. Just two weeks ago, he posted on X that “Giga Berlin rave cave (aka HAMSTER) now alive! Party on…” with a video that seemed to show footage from inside a nightclub for Tesla employees located beneath the Grünheide plant. This venue – which is not currently open to the public – immediately brought on much mockery online.

Tesla is also currently involved in an ongoing dispute between its workers council and the union IG Metall, who claim that Tesla workers are facing a culture of bullying and undue pressure over the number of safety accidents at the plant.
