Missing: Enormous 500-year old bronze bell

Listen, it’s not funny. An enormous 500-kilo bronze bell dating from 1513 has completely vanished from a churchyard in Berlin-Heinersdorf and the priest is extremely upset. The historic item was last seen on Thursday evening and reported as missing to the police on Sunday. It is not known who could have taken it, but the item is so heavy that it must have required some planning.

“You can’t just stick a half ton bell under your arm,” commented Anne-Kathin Finke, the parish priest for the church on Romain-Rolland-Straße, outside which the bell had stood for the last 50 years. “The bell was damaged in the turmoil of the Second World War… This is a very painful loss for the congregation and for me.”

Police are investigating the theft and the church has started a campaign on social media to try and recover the bell.
