The body of 24-year-old Maria Fernanda Sanchez, a student from Mexico, was found in the Berlin district of Adlershof on Saturday afternoon, according to a report from rbb. A passerby discovered her body in the Teltow Canal near Altglienicker Bridge, and alerted rescue workers.

Right now, no third-party fault can be assumed, but police are still investigating. Sanchez had been missing since July 22, and a large scale search had been underway for the missing student. Missing persons signs were hung on fences and lampposts across the city, and a widespread social media campaign, run by the Instagram account @find_maffy_berlin under the hashtag #bringbackmaff was spreading awareness.

Maria – known as Maff to her friends – left her apartment on July 22. She was due to meet friends for the CSD demonstration that day, but she cancelled around 4pm, saying she had too much else to do. The last contact with her was when she texted her father and a friend at around 21:00 that evening.

The Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena offered her condolences on Twitter, posting: “We accompany her family in this difficult and painful moment with respect and solidarity. We stand by her side. We will continue to investigate what happened. Our deepest condolences.”
