Berliner reportedly killed in Hamas attack, Palestine march banned

Four days after the Hamas attacks in Israel, the after-effects continue to be felt in Berlin. Yesterday, we heard news of the first Berliner reported to be among the victims. The 22-year-old was apparently visiting the Kibbutz Nir Os located near the Gaza Strip with her British boyfriend when the attacks occurred. The girl’s mother first received a message that they were fleeing to a bunker – later, she was informed that their bodies had been discovered.

Recent violence in the region has already resulted in a number of incidents in Berlin, with supporters on both sides holding demonstrations, and a violent incident taking place in a Neukölln schoolyard where a teacher hit a student after he displayed the Palestinian flag.

Berlin is home to the largest Palestinian community in Europe, and now, a planned march “For a Free Palestine” has been banned on the grounds that anti-Israel chants or slogans glorifying violence might be expected. This follows the ban of similar official pro-Palestine marches in recent years.
