A tragic situation occurred yesterday at Zehlendorf’s Krumme Lanke. A 17-year-old student, who went to the lake with his classmates, drowned there in the early afternoon.
His classmates called emergency services when they lost sight of the boy and couldn’t find him anywhere; shortly before first responders arrived, they discovered his lifeless body floating in the water. They subsequently pulled him to shore and began administering first aid.
Although it didn’t take long for a helicopter to arrive at the scene and paramedics resuscitated the boy and rushed him to hospital, he unfortunately did not survive. His classmates were taken to school by a fire department bus and given psychological care. The police are now investigating the circumstances of the accident.
As the hot weather draws many Berliners to lakes, the fire department urges us to cool down before jumping into the water to avoid thermal shock, as well as not to jump into unknown bodies of water – especially not headfirst. It is best to stick to designated swimming areas, preferably ones where a lifeguard is present. It is also advised to wear sunscreen, avoid direct sunlight as much as possible and drink plenty of water.
