Few stories have inspired artists as deeply as Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet score, the tragic tale of two lovers from rival families becomes a sweeping orchestral drama – rich in lyrical melodies, vivid character scenes and powerful dance rhythms.
Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, John Williams’ Piano Concerto and the debut of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla
This April, the Berliner Philharmoniker present highlights from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, bringing the emotional intensity and color of the ballet to the concert stage. The performances also mark the orchestra debut of Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė‑Tyla, internationally celebrated for her expressive interpretations and imaginative programming.
Before Prokofiev’s Shakespearean drama unfolds, the program opens with a suite from Burattino and the Golden Key by Mieczysław Weinberg – music that leads audiences into the playful, ironic world of a puppet maker.
Another highlight of the evening is the Piano Concerto by legendary film composer John Williams, performed by renowned pianist Emanuel Ax. A Grammy-winning artist admired for his warmth, musical intelligence, Ax brings virtuosity to this contemporary concerto.
Together, these works create an evening that moves between wit, brilliance and one of literature’s most enduring love stories.
