Joyful Failure
Do you have a crippling fear of failure? No need to worry, because laborgras are here to demonstrate how to fail spectacularly. Premiering this week at Radialsystem, Joyful Failure is a show dedicated to the fragility of failing. In today’s late-stage capitalist hellscape, failure is seen as a weakness, a flaw to be avoided and certainly not celebrated. Taking inspiration and wisdom from Samuel Beckett – “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” – laborgras consider failure as a poetic metaphor that goes beyond a lack of success. Moving between the playful and melancholy, six dancers will navigate relationships and resonances across an ever-shifting landscape. Accompanied by musician Liam Byrne, who blends electronic textures with the viola da gamba, the performance creates a high-contrast sonic space where movement and sound intertwine. laborgras have been part of Germany’s independent dance landscape for more than three decades. Founded in Hamburg in 1994 by Renate Graziadei and Arthur Stäldi, the company relocated to Berlin in 2020, continuing its commitment to treating dance as a form of experimentation. Their practice is rooted in collaboration, curiosity and an ongoing willingness to see where the process leads.
