As October hits, we’re revving into high nightlife-mode and trying to find an excuse to say we live in this city. Yeah, we throw a lot of parties from September through the colder months to prove that it’s worth it. I still actually feel it’s a bit slow though.

Mostly, with art fair week coming up (six fairs in six days: Oct 5-10), there are a lot of vernissages mixed in with the standard fare. I’m not going to run from art, but here are at least few things where filling in awkward gaps in conversation doesn’t involve staring at a wall or trying to get a buzz off cheap white wine…

Literary aficionados and hipsters can unite at a reading by bad-boy author Bret Easton Ellis from Imperial Bedrooms (Fri, Oct 1 @ Admiralpalast) – his sequel to Less Than Zero – followed by the same excerptsin the German translation (these will be presented by actor Wolfram Koch). Hey, it’s like watching a book being dubbed!

If you don’t want to meet up with tons of individuals whose lives were changed by Fight-by-Rules-of-Zero, I suggest hitting up the other side of alterna-legend at Ich Bin Ein Berliner (Fri, Oct 1 @ SO36). There’s something about the let’s-give-it-a-try attitude of the festival and the mix-it-up spirit that makes SO feel kinda relevant again. It would be remiss of me, though, not to mention that Randy Twigg (Fri, Oct 1 @ White Trash), the lead-off in EXB’s “New Breed” article in the September Music Issue, is tearing up Schönhauser Allee that night.

And I guess if you’re like the many who figure that live music is detrimental to the definition of a party, there’s always Remmidemmi: The 100 Most Beautiful DJs in the City (Fri, Oct 1 @ Festsaal Kreuzberg). If you’ve ever wanted to fuck a DJ, chances are pretty high that you will there. Then again, who hasn’t in this city?

But if you can’t really stay away from the instruments this weekend, and are in the mood for something timeless, pick up some Kurtis Blow (Sat, Oct 2 @ Tube Station). The old-school rapper will be backed by DJ Mark Anthony and his very own eponymously named prodigy, Kurtis Blow, Jr. It’s a chance to get your classic cred, kids. Or, if you’re still not really sure who you are or what to do, and are looking for some answers, there’s Successfully Led Real Life (Sat, Oct 2 @ General Public), in which the art collective Group Public examines the balance between experiencing and performing, and poses a particularly important existential question: “Do I have a real life?” Hmmm…
