The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee will hold its 48th session starting Sunday, deciding on new entries for the list of cultural and natural heritage sites. The committee will meet in the South Korean coastal city of Busan until July 29 and award the coveted titles.
The Zehlendorf Forest Estate in southwest Berlin is in the running to join a list of ‘Berlin Modern Housing Estates’ and become a world heritage site. The 100-year-old Bauhaus, popularly known as the ‘Parrot-Estate’, is considered to have a good chance of success.
Becoming a world heritage site would see the Parrot-Estate join a renowned list of cultural landmarks including the Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Canyon and traditions such as reggae and yoga. A decision on the application for recognition of the Zehlendorf forest settlement is expected on July 27.
