
Leslie Gore’s “It’s My Party” would be a fitting soundtrack for this Moabit gem. Instead, owner Freddy Leck decided on classical music when opening his Waschsalon in 2008.
But overall, the place oozes 1950s aesthetics, with retro wallpaper, crystal chandeliers and shelves lined with miniature collector’s vintage washing powder boxes. The signs on the cream-and-blue walls bear a typical 1950s font, and if you don’t look too closely at the retro-looking albeit modern machines, you could be fooled into believing you’ve entered a time machine.
Einstein coffee, tea and cold drinks are available for your wait (a cappuccino is €1.50), and if you don’t bring your own, you can buy a €4.99 box of Leck’s house brand of washing powder.
As for the actual laundromat, a 6kg wash sets you back €3.20, drying costs 70 cents for 10 minutes and 30 minutes of ironing is a mere €1.
In the loungey back room, you can kick back with a snack or watch TV, browse bookshelves or doze to the endless whir of the machines.
But that’s not all: as a final mid-century throwback, there is even a smoking room.
