Seven days with Abundo

Theatres, exhibitions, cinemas, concerts, workshops, festivals… Berlin’s cultural landscape is unbeatable. But with so many great events every day, it’s hard to keep track, and you’d need deep pockets to attend everything. Enter: the Abundo app.

Abundo

With an Abundo subscription, all tickets are included, whether they’re theatre, cinema or concert. Starting from just €29 per month (or €55 for the Plus 1 Membership), you can experience culture as often as you like. We tested Abundo for a week to see if it lived up to its promise.Making culture accessible to everyone, regardless of wallet, educational background and social status, is the aim of Abundo. It’s simple: sign up and the app shows you what’s on in your area: standup, dance, concerts, you name it. It’s not all about well-known venues either. The app highlights smaller spots that might otherwise go unnoticed. You can either see what’s happening in your neighbourhood, or filter by areas of interest or event type. The range is enormous. To test the app as thoroughly as possible, we tried out events from different categories.

Mad Monkey Room

On Monday, our week started with Mad Monkey Monday at the Mad Monkey Room in Prenzlauer Berg. The standup evening had everyone in stitches, and even featured a few well-known names like Maria Clara Groppler and Rebecca Pap.

On Tuesday at midday, we went on an extraordinary boat tour along the Spree. With Audrey Ahoi, you’re guided through Berlin on the MS Audrey by drag queen Audrey Naline. Along the way, you see a different side of the city through satirical and hilarious commentary.

Audrey Naline

Still buzzing from the boat trip, on Wednesday we booked another event that celebrates diversity. Yasss Queen was exactly what we expected from a comedy night with that name. The event is designed to provide women* with a gentle entry into standup comedy. People of all genders are invited to try their hand on stage in front of a supportive audience.

After all the fun events, we were ready for something different. So on Thursday, the Abundo app recommended the film The Smashing Machine at the Hackesche Höfe cinema in Mitte. Although Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is better known for his action roles, he shows his sensitive side in this two-hour biopic about MMA fighter Mark Kerr. This is a film we might not have watched if it hadn’t been so easy to spontaneously go with the Abundo subscription.

DIE MAUER exhibition

Friday was all about history with a tour of the Asisi Panorama exhibition DIE MAUER near Checkpoint Charlie.

Then on Saturday, we saw Hospital der Geister at Deutsches Theater, which had us both laughing and jumping out of our seats.

Hospital der Geister

Sunday was the grand finale of our eventful week: Ruthven’s concert at Kantine am Berghain. His sound blends R’n’B, future funk and 80s vibes, landing somewhere between Prince and D’Angelo, but still entirely his own.

What a week! Abundo introduced us to events we’d have otherwise missed, and the subscription meant we could dive into the city’s culture as often as we fancied. Abundo brings out the best of Berlin. Whether you’ve lived here for years or just arrived, it’s a great way to broaden your cultural horizons.
