New index sees Berlin rents above €7 per square metre
A new rent index is often an excuse for landlords to quickly up the price they demand
Thought you were paying a lot already? Every two years, Berlin commissions a rent index or Mietspiegel, which determines how much landlords are allowed to charge their tenants. Until now, the reference point was the 2021 index which listed an average rental price at €6.79 per square metre of living space. The new index will see an increase of five percent, making the new price €7.16. This is the first time the price in Berlin has climbed above €7.
A new rent index is often an excuse for landlords to quickly up the price they demand of their tenants. The survey takes into account the location of an apartment, and the age of a building and its facilities. What is especially important about the publication of the index is that it sets a limit to potential increases in rent: landlords are allowed to raise your rent by a maximum of 15% within three years, provided they remain below the rent index.
