When was the last time you wrote a letter? While some of the paper and pen holdouts may answer “today,” the rest of us are probably content with our email inbox. But should we be? On Wednesday 26, June (8pm) Letters Live is reminding Berliners of the beauty of this often-overlooked form of communication with a star-studded reading of literature’s great letters.

In their first event in Germany, Letters Live will turn the Berlin Philarmonie into a literature landscape complete with storytelling, mystery, and music. At the centre of every Letters Live performance is the unexpected (after all, they keep their cast secret until the show begins). It’s all about building up anticipation, which is sure to be well-rewarded. Past shows have included performances by Benedict Cumberbatch, Woody Harrelson, Jude Law, and Taika Waititi.

Their upcoming Berlin debut isn’t Letters Live’s first time penning an excellent programme. Over the past decade, they’ve held 70 shows with 350 performers. Central to their performances is charitable outreach. While in Berlin, they will be supporting Children for Tomorrow, a foundation that provides therapeutic support to children affected by conflict, violence and war.

Supported by Montblanc, Letters Live will be hosted in both German and English, giving Berliners an opportunity to experience these events in a multicultural space.

“We are honoured to be in Berlin for this event as proud global sponsors of Letters Live, marking the first bilingual show in its history,” shared Montblanc chief Marketing and Merchandising Officer Vincent Montalescot “This partnership underscores our dedication to fostering a love for language and the written word.”

Selections for the performance come from across the world. While the lineup of letters is also kept under wraps, attendees can expect works from influential figures as illustrious as Charlotte Bronte and Mohandas Gandhi.

“Letters Live has a unique ability to connect with audiences worldwide, leaving a lasting impact with its powerful performances,” CEO of Canongate and Letters Live Producer Jamie Byong said.

If you are a long-time snail mail enthusiast or newly minted letter writer, Letters Live is your opportunity to appreciate this important (and underrecognised) form of literature.
