Japan drowns, Berlin parties

Berlin is hosting several fundraisers and charity events all over the city in aid of the relief effort in Japan. You can do your bit too.

After the March 11 news at the largest earthquake ever recorded in the history of Japan hit just east off the coast of the Oshika Peninsula in Tōhoku, support has poured in from around the world.

It can be hard at times for us who are so far removed to comprehend that what you are seeing is even real. As if the footage we watch of cars, homes and people being swept away by the following tsunami are so many toys in a bathtub. But it is real and you can help.

Berlin itself may not be the first city you would think of that has a massive surplus of money to donate. Nevertheless, promoters all over the city are organizing specially arranged charity events and transforming club nights into fundraisers.

The Help Japan Party (Sun, Mar 27 @ Suicide Circus) is leading the way by encouraging you to support the Japanese people directly and quickly, without it even interfering with your normal party schedule. A line-up like you might find on any other night there includes Donato Dozzy, Peter Van Hoesen, Dapayk, Marcel Knopf and loads more. Absolutely everybody will be working for free: from the DJs and live acts to the bar and door staff. No fees or payments whatsoever. All money will go to Japan directly via the Japanese Embassy and UNICEF.

The regular night, Air Abraham (Fri, April 8 @ Tape) is joining the relief effort too. With a night of exhibitions, live performances and hardcore electronica.

You can also feast on an international extravaganza of party tunes with the Heartbeat premiere party (Thurs, Mar 31 @ Chez Jacki) a huge selection of DJs from all over the world will be playing and a portion of each entry fee will go to DMBQ/Boredoms Japan charity. This charity specifically assists Japanese musicians, artists and their families in some of the worst hit areas of Northern Japan. Give a helping hand to your fellow music-addict.

Artists are also being sought to come and perform for free at this benefit concert on (Fri, April 1 @ UdK) Specifically chamber music groups who could participate in this concert would be welcomed and appreciated greatly.

A few events have even happened before we wrote this article and many more are sure to pop up all over the city in the coming days. Keep checking EXBERLINER for similar events and make sure you head to your preferred charity’s website and donate directly as well.
