YOUR WEEKEND: A few years ago it would have sounded like the title of a police series, but 48 Stunden Neukölln (Fri, June 25 – Sun, June 27 @ every place white people in Neukölln go) promises to be the deb ball for an area that, once only settled by artists and bohemes after cost-benefit analysis, now appears more infinitely satisfying than what Mitte has to offer, unless Münchener men in expensive striped shirts and tiny rectangular glasses are your designer bag. And in another decade, we will, no doubt, have little choice in the matter.
Just about every gallery, temporary space and expat-oriented shop/restaurant is participating; I’m too overwhelmed (and lazy) to cherry pick through the highlights. But weekend warrior Fortuna’s Feast Private Dining will be featuring the photographs of JOE DILWORTH Berlin’s final connection to the rock’n’roll lifestyle, while RAYMOND WOLFF spins pre-1960 shellac 78rpm discs of composers oriented around Neukölln/Rixdorf which would include, one would hope, the plaintive street cries of the heroin dealer. And Ida Nowhere, having given up all hope, is allowing you to turn it into a museum of your choosing, in the manner of the children’s book Stone Soup. Or other classics.
One classic who has altered as he’s aged is legendary Public Enemy producer HANK SHOCKLEE, now more taken with dubstep than Diddy. Shocklee will be playing a couple of gigs on Friday, both at the Basstheworld 5th Anniversary (Fri, June 25 @ Club Maria) and at Friday Nights (Fri, June 25 @ Bar 25) along with THE MOLE and techno-master MIKE SHANNON. It’s certainly a line-up which avoids the spoon-fed (insert cocaine joke here), but if being fed is your thing, 24 Thai architecture students are serving a free meal over the weekend under the appetizing sobriquet Glong (Sat, June 26 – Sun, June 27 @ Mulackstraße 31/32. Reservation only), assuming you are willing to sit in a specially designed pod and eat in isolation. Because architecture is all about serving the practical needs of society, not the egotistical curiosity of the architect, right? We live as we dine, alone.
