Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is in town. Under the artistic leadership of Glenn Edgerton, the ever-resourceful Chicago-based company took over the Joyce Theater with rotating performances of two programs featuring revived works.
Performances come from resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo, with the return of his female duet Cloudless, and his Second to Last etude, originally commissioned by Ballet Arizona, which explores choreographic possibilities within the duet form.
The male solo A Picture of You Falling, a spinoff from Crystal Pite’s female solo, danced by Jesse Bechard or Jason Hortin is a meditation on a failed love affair. With this piece, Pite pursues her interest in combining strongly theatrical effects and dance, taking her search for what lies beneath the surface of our lives as the starting point for a black comedy about life and love.
Also in the program is Robyn Mineko Williams’ Waxing Moon, which contemplates the process of becoming: its protagonist considers possibilities for his future through engagement with two forces we see as figures.
The bold Gustavo Ramirez Sansano takes inspiration from George Balanchine’s 1947 Theme and Variations. I AM Mr. B was created to Tchaikovsky’s third suite for orchestra as a “celebration of dance” in tribute to the prolific choreographer who transformed the American ballet.
