Statistically the most successful club in Berlin by a long shot, BFC Dynamo were the record holding, 10-time winners of the GDR top flight, and are a team whose history includes six European Cup quarter finals and and a Cup Winner’s Cup semi-final.

This record is dismissed by many, including their hated rivals Union, due to the influence of benefactor and Stasi boss Erich Mielke. It certainly helped having the most feared man in the GDR as a friend. The wheels fell off the juggernaut as the wall came down and the club briefly became FC Berlin.

Last seasons Berliner Pokal win was the first sign of a renaissance for years, and though they lost in the first round of the DFB pokal to the Bundesliga’s Kaiserslautern, their impressive form under Heiko Bonan had gone a long way to helping the fans imagine that they can put the bad old days behind them, but his leaving set them back again.
