The Berliner is hiring!
Are you a resourceful and organised journalist with a passion for Berlin culture and issues? The Berliner is looking for a curious, proactive and detail-oriented Assistant Editor. In this role, you’ll be an integral part of the production of the monthly magazine, liaising with our writers and editing culture and lifestyle content. You’ll have the opportunity to report and write your own features. You’ll also help to manage the workflow of the production process and assist the editorial team with content planning and organisation. You will liaise with the digital, social and marketing teams to ensure communication and productivity across the publication.
This is a full-time position based in Berlin, starting in February 2025
Responsibilities include:
- Communicating with writers and section editors; managing the monthly proofreading process
- Editing and copyediting content
- Administrative function of the editorial process, including workflow and spreadsheet management
- Writing for print and online across a variety of topics
- Interviewing
- Fact-checking and proofreading
- Assisting with research
- Working with WordPress to keep content up-to-date online
- Helping with social media, events and partner content where needed
An ideal candidate will have:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, or a related field (journalism qualifications and/or experience a plus)
- Experience working at a media publication
- Native-level English (German skills are an advantage)
- Sharp command of English grammar
- Accuracy and attention to detail, especially where language and syntax are concerned
- Ability to match house style and tone
- Ability to prioritise, multitask, meet deadlines and work under pressure
- Confidence problem-solving
- Strong initiative and capacity for self-direction
- Experience with social media and communication/organisation tools (Google docs/sheets, Slack, etc). Experience with a CMS is an advantage.
- Familiarity with Berlin and The Berliner magazine, in print and digital
