When this (Berlin) classic hit cinemas in 1981 (three years after the book was published), it was viewed as rather sensationalist. Yet this film by Uli Edel is a great German independent film that keeps its young protagonists firmly at the centre of attention, thereby developing great power. The ‘Sound’ nightclub, the Deutschlandhalle and its portrayal of West Berlin make it a real highlight.
