an excellent idea and definitely worth supporting
At the newly reopened Haus Kunst Mitte, eight female Berlin professors including Monica Bonvicini and Jorinde Voigt selected a handful of former Master’s students and exhibited their work alongside their own in an intriguing, cross-generational dialogue.
The aim is to increase the visibility of female and non-binary artists who, even at art school, encounter discrimination in a male-dominated world. Of the 175 professors who’ve ever taught at the Berlin University of the Arts, only 30 have been women.
Here, the artists have been grouped alongside their professors, and it is fascinating to see the influences on their practice, from the flowing drawing style of Voigt’s former students to the conceptual thread running through the work of Karin Sander’s protégées.
The show is well put together and full of surprises: while Sander commemorates a preserved smudge left by a dog in a stairwell, her former student, Sophia Pompéry, blows up – to enormous proportions – the smudged full-stops from literary works over the ages. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, NFTs and music installations are all on show here. It could do with a bit more contextualisation, but it’s an excellent idea and definitely worth supporting.
