Sinner: Gili Shani’s photographic catalogue of transgression

In his first ever book of graphic photography, Gili Shani captures raw intimacy and asks what a "sinner" really is.

Despite being a renowned photographer for more than 20 years, Sinner is Gili Shani’s first ever solo photography book – and it almost didn’t happen. Six printers refused it on account of the graphic nature of the content, and if it wasn’t for one open-minded German press, it might never have seen the light of day.

The concept of the book is about both embracing and challenging what a sinner is. Shani shot 77 different people, including individuals and couples of all genders and sexualities. Some of them are Berlin-based and captured in their own homes, others travelled far and wide to be photographed, often in hotel rooms.

In contrast to the staged intimacy of most pornography, the images capture real people in real situations. It feels more like a document of a lifestyle and a reflection of our kink-centric times than the unrealistic portrayals of sex in porn. There is no retouch on any of the photos and, bar the occasional use of a ring light, Shani uses exclusively natural light.

The photos will only ever be available to view in the book – they will never be published digitally or on social media. In this way, Shani is giving the project the prestige it deserves.

The book itself is a 400-page black-from-every-angle block, using the blackest black ink available. The print run was limited to 1000 copies, with many already sold as part of the successful crowdfunding campaign, so if you want one you need to be fast.
