“Because Kunstsalon allows unrepresented artists to participate, it has a certain vibrancy and home-grown feel to it that attracts a lot of people who are interested in art but are not necessarily part of the ‘art scene’. For an artist like myself (I have works ranging in price from €50-€5000), being there in person with my work is an optimal way to meet people, make contacts and sell a lot of art.” Carl Smith, Independent artist, Berlin. Third year at Kunstsalon.

Background Kunstsalon was founded in 2004 by photographer Edmund Piper.

In a nutrshell The anti-institutional alternative for unrepresented artists and new galleries which can’t afford conventional fairs.

New this year Piper is taking an artistic sabbatical, so the seventh edition of the fair is run by Roland-Richard Klümpen, Berlin-based art collector and Piper’s friend of over 20 years. Kunstsalon is moving from its original Prenzlauer Berg location (in the Humboldt Umspannwerk) to the three low, long, redbrick warehouse-like buildings of A-Station: unrenovated slaughterhouses built in 1881, and now surrounded by the Plattenbau-tastic no man’s land across from S-Bhf Landsberger Allee.

The vibe This very ‘DIY Berlin’ fair draws in a mixed crowd of art enthusiasts, families and gem-hunters.

Rules of the game There are no rules. Unrepresented artists can sign up for exhibition spaces, which start at €220.
