Museum Sunday is your favourite day of the month and Berlin’s affordable art markets are your favourite places to browse, but everything still seems to be slightly out of budget?
Kunstschule Berlin just launched a project that might provide some consolation for the poor but tasteful. Across Berlin, four Kunst2Go vending machines now offer original artworks from Berlin-based artists – for just €8 a pop.
The gold-painted contraptions are disused tights vending machines – a godsend for the busy 1990s business lady and hilariously obsolete today. To make them fit for the modern art vending business, the Kunstschule invited Berlin vending machine veteran Rahel Bachem, inventor of the Tattoomat, to consult. Small enough to fit into a 10×15 cardboard box, the intricate artworks are all made using different styles and mediums: glass, watercolour, lino print, urban landscapes, collages – the list goes on.
At the moment, you’ll have to take a chance and hope you’ll get a piece you like (let yourself be transported back to the days of gumball machines and the sweet excitement of not knowing what flavour you’d get), but once the fifth and final machine is up and running, each of the 15 artists involved in the project will get their own designated slot and button.
With all proceeds going to the artists, this is a lovely way of supporting the underground art world and starting your own collection without breaking the bank. Who says you have to spend a fortune on great art? After all, it’s not the size that matters.
