At the centre of a massive multi-month, multi-venue retrospective of the late German filmmaker Harun Farocki (1944-2014), Neuer Berliner Kunstverein’s exhibition Harun Farocki: By Other Means assembles his film and video installation works that have been presented in fine art spaces. In this form, Farocki dissects the logic of cinema through works such as Dubbing (2006), where Robert De Niro plays out his infamous Taxi Driver scene in many different languages, and War Tropes (2011), a five-channel video installation that brings together strikingly similar scenes from different war films. While this well-curated exhibition is certainly a nice addition to the retrospective, it’ll be most appreciated by those who are already familiar with Farocki’s work. You’ll get a better introduction at Arsenal, which continues its screening of Farocki’s entire filmography between Oct 21-31 with a focus on the years between 1981 and 1992. Conversely, die-hard Farocki fans should not miss Farocki Now: A Temporary Academy, a long weekend of English-language talks and presentations organized by the Harun Farocki Institute that opens with “Accessing Images” (moderated by Sven Lütticken) at HKW (Oct 18, 19:00) followed by three days at Silent Green Kulturquartier (Oct 19-21).
