Over in Hamburger Bahnhof’s main hall, Eva Fàbregas’ new mammoth installation, Devouring Lovers, coils itself around the ceiling’s black interior brackets. It’s quite the spectacle: vast biomorphic baubles in soft lavenders and pinks, spilling out across the hall like a fast-spreading fungal growth.
In places, the effect is ruined by the very visible central seams of the fabric surrounding the balls. And why bang on about “tactile engagement” in the exhibition text if you’re not even allowed to touch it? That aside, it’s a lot of fun, playing to our notions of desire, and hitting both the sensual and the deeply abject.

With this show, alongside Nationalgalerie: A Collection for the 21st Century, and a free exhibition dedicated to the history of the building itself (which was practically decimated during World War II), plus a mediocre show for US artist Christina Quarles and an excellent one for Fred Sandback, there is no better time to visit this reborn art palace. ★★★★
